    Unrecognized Backscattering in Low Energy Beta Spectroscopy

    We present studies on electron backscattering from the surface of plastic scintillator beta detectors. By using a setup of two detectors coaxial with a strong external magnetic field - one detector serving as primary detector, the other as veto-detector to detect backscattering - we investigate amount and spectrum of unrecognized backscattering, i.e. events where only one detector recorded a trigger signal.     Kytococcus aerolatus sp. nov., isolated from indoor air in a room colonized with moulds

    A Gram-positive, coccoid bacterial isolate (02-St-019/1(T)), forming beige pigmented colonies was obtained from an indoor air sample. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity studies it was determined that this isolate 02-St-019/1(T) belonged to the genus Kytococcus, showing sequence similarties of 98.6% to Kytococcus schroeteri DSM 13884(T) and 98.3% to Kytococcus sedentarius DSM 20547(T), respectively. The diagnostic diaminoacid of the peptidoglycan was lysine, cell wall sugars were ribose and xylose. The major menaquinones detected were MK-7 and MK-8. The polar lipid profile consisted of the major phospholipids diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylinositol mannoside. Fatty acid patterns were composed of major amounts of the iso- and anteiso-branched fatty acids anteiso C(17:0), iso C(15:0) and iso C(17:0) and unsaturated fatty acids (C(17:1) omega8c, iso C(17:1) omega9c, and C(17:1) omega8c) with smaller amounts of the straight-chain fatty acids C(15:0), C(16:0) and C(17:0). The results of DNA-DNA hybridizations and physiological and biochemical tests clearly allowed a genotypic and phenotypic differentiation of strain 02-St-019/1(T) from the two described Kytococcus species. On the basis of these results a novel species to be named Kytococcus aerolatus sp. nov., is proposed, with the type strain 02-St-019/1(T) (=DSM 22179(T)=CCM 7639(T))

    Testing for equivalence of pre-trends in Difference-in-Differences estimation

    The plausibility of the ``parallel trends assumption'' in Difference-in-Differences estimation is usually assessed by a test of the null hypothesis that the difference between the average outcomes of both groups is constant over time before the treatment. However, failure to reject the null hypothesis does not imply the absence of differences in time trends between both groups. We provide equivalence tests that allow researchers to find evidence in favor of the parallel trends assumption and thus increase the credibility of their treatment effect estimates. While we motivate our tests in the standard two-way fixed effects model, we discuss simple extensions to settings in which treatment adoption is staggered over time

By including context data, a new category of information services has been established. On the application side, a range of innovative services, providing the user with an added-value, could be observed in the previous years, boosted by the wide-spread adoption of smartphones in developed countries. For the application provider, the question how to configure the business model is crucial: several factors such as the service configuration, the revenue model and the configuration of the value creation network, which all can be seen as decisive factors for success or failure of a service. In this paper we present a context-aware service named \u27Digital Graffiti\u27 and describe the process of the business model development. As an outcome of this process, a specific business model, based on feasibility and future prospect, was chosen and further described

    The extensive hydrocarbon-mediated fixation of hydrothermal gold in the Witwatersrand Basin, South Africa

    Abstract There is a close spatial relation between high-grade gold mineralization in the Witwatersrand basin and carbonaceous nodules, veins and seams. Hydrocarbons thus may well have been essential in ore genesis. We have sampled four major gold-, uranium- and hydrocarbon-bearing ore horizons, namely the Carbon Leader, Vaal, B and Black reefs, to determine the role of hydrocarbons in the accumulation and hydrothermal fixation of gold. Our multipronged approach included high-resolution scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM, TEM), nanotomography with video clips, and geochemical modeling. Post-depositional hydrothermal activity at the peak of regional metamorphism produced an assemblage of quartz, phyllosilicates, brannerite, crandallite, florencite, monazite and gold in all four reefs. The gold, hydrocarbons and associated mineral assemblages are closely related on the micro to nano scale. Gold deposition occurred in interstices, as fracture fillings in detrital minerals, and on the surface of migrated solid hydrocarbon residues. The spherical to elliptical inclusions in the gold consist of an outer pyrobitumen phase and a central void space, partially associated with nanometric gold, uraninite, coffinite and silica. The hydrocarbon-bearing inclusion likely formed by the entrapment of a fossil liquid oil precursor during gold precipitation. The oil was subsequently thermally altered and converted into the final pyrobitumen and gaseous residues. Geochemical calculations to simulate the interaction of an invading hot hydrothermal fluid with the hydrocarbons in the reefs reveal that a very small amount of hydrocarbons will drastically decrease the aqueous solubility of gold and hence cause its instant precipitation. We extend our genetic model for the epigenetic formation of gold in the Witwatersrand. Regional metamorphism promoted the extensive and likely basin-wide circulation of hydrothermal fluids; these were capable of mobilizing substantial amounts of gold. The liquid, gaseous and solid hydrocarbons in the reefs acted as efficient chemical traps for the concentration of gold. Being strong chemical reductants, they caused the rapid precipitation and accumulation of gold on the surface of the fossil oil droplets and already solidified hydrocarbons. The release of the gases from accessible hydrocarbons into the sediments away from their source buffered the redox state of the hydrothermal solutions even at a considerable distance from the pyrobitumen seams and veins, likely resulting in the deposition of gold in the absence of visible hydrocarbons. Although our findings do not explain the ultimate origin and exceptional endowment of gold in the Witwatersrand, we do provide intriguing evidence for the large-scale hydrothermal mobilization, accumulation and fixation of gold mediated by hydrocarbons during post-depositional metamorphism

    Recent Advances and the Potential for Clinical Use of Autofluorescence Detection of Extra-Ophthalmic Tissues

    The autofluorescence (AF) characteristics of endogenous fluorophores allow the label-free assessment and visualization of cells and tissues of the human body. While AF imaging (AFI) is well-established in ophthalmology, its clinical applications are steadily expanding to other disciplines. This review summarizes clinical advances of AF techniques published during the past decade. A systematic search of the MEDLINE database and Cochrane Library databases was performed to identify clinical AF studies in extra-ophthalmic tissues. In total, 1097 articles were identified, of which 113 from internal medicine, surgery, oral medicine, and dermatology were reviewed. While comparable technological standards exist in diabetology and cardiology, in all other disciplines, comparability between studies is limited due to the number of differing AF techniques and non-standardized imaging and data analysis. Clear evidence was found for skin AF as a surrogate for blood glucose homeostasis or cardiovascular risk grading. In thyroid surgery, foremost, less experienced surgeons may benefit from the AF-guided intraoperative separation of parathyroid from thyroid tissue. There is a growing interest in AF techniques in clinical disciplines, and promising advances have been made during the past decade. However, further research and development are mandatory to overcome the existing limitations and to maximize the clinical benefits

    Ultrafast photocurrents at the surface of the three-dimensional topological insulator Bi2Se3\mathrm{Bi}_2\mathrm{Se}_3

    Topological insulators constitute a new and fascinating class of matter with insulating bulk yet metallic surfaces that host highly mobile charge carriers with spin-momentum locking. Remarkably, the direction and magnitude of surface currents can be controlled with tailored light beams, but the underlying mechanisms are not yet well understood. To directly resolve the "birth" of such photocurrents we need to boost the time resolution to the scale of elementary scattering events (∼\sim 10 fs). Here, we excite and measure photocurrents in the three-dimensional model topological insulator Bi2Se3\mathrm{Bi}_2\mathrm{Se}_3 with a time resolution as short as 20 fs by sampling the concomitantly emitted broadband THz electromagnetic field from 1 to 40 THz. Remarkably, the ultrafast surface current response is dominated by a charge transfer along the Se-Bi bonds. In contrast, photon-helicity-dependent photocurrents are found to have orders of magnitude smaller magnitude than expected from generation scenarios based on asymmetric depopulation of the Dirac cone. Our findings are also of direct relevance for optoelectronic devices based on topological-insulator surface currents
